In a new development, the show also will highlight a handful of garments created as part of Sustainable Textile Design, a special interdisciplinary seminar cosponsored by the university’s Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. “There’s a myth that organic cotton is a sustainable textile, but it requires so much water that it really isn’t,” explains Verhage-Abrams, who teaches the course. In contrast, “hemp and bamboo don’t require much water, don’t require pesticides and actually replenish the soil.” Meanwhile new cotton alternatives such as Tencel are made in closed-loop systems that retain, reprocess and reuse fluid from the initial production. “It’s pretty revolutionary, and the most sustainable method we have right now.” Finally, in what has become a tradition for the show, Fashion & Flash will conclude with a single contemporary wedding gown, selected this year by alumnus Cristina Espinosa (BFA '01), a freelance designer at Calvin Klein Better Sportswear. The winning gown, by senior Camilla White, pairs a sleek yet romantic top of silk charmeuse and appliqué with an elegant skirt of silk organza and tulle. “It’s all about the magic of true love,” explains White, who began constructing the dress last November. "It is about the beauty of romance." A Valentino-inspired evening gown by Lauren Vassallo. The strapless gown features six rows of 90 variously scaled “shingles,” all in medium-weight coral satin. The gown needs to fit the overall mood of your wedding, suit your preferences for a formal or an informal setting and, most of all, flatter you. If you are going to require your cxmslaoooaxm attendants to wear gowns matching the general style of your wedding gown, you also need to consider how those dresses will look on them, bridal consultants say. wedding dresses According to findings published by Scripps Howard News Service, editors at The Knot, an online services providing information about all facets of a wedding, have asked gown designers around the country for advice for girls of all shapes and sizes everywhere. - If you are petite, a column-like sheath or A-line dress will work well. These shapes create a long interrupted line. Stick to open, sexier necklines — think strapless and off-the-shoulder styles. wow gold Steer clear of the big ball gown or a dress with voluminous fabric since it will look like it is wearing you. - If you are full-figured, you might look best in a ball gown with a Basque waist, which has a slimming effect. A high-waisted A-line with a low neckline also flatters curves. aion gold - If you are tall, you have almost unlimited options. Tall women look great in everything from sheaths (if you’re also slim) to A-lines and full ball gowns. Accentuate your collarbone with fitted skip gowns that boast high necks and long sleeves, and steer clear of updos and headpieces that add too much extra height. - If you are pear-shaped, a strapless ball gown will cover your bottom and focus on your better half. An off-the-shoulder neckline will make your top more in proportion to your bottom. A sheath can be unflattering, and a V-neck will draw the eyes downward, where you don’t want them to go. wow power leveling - If you’re busty, accentuate the positive with an uplifting foundation garment and an off-the-shoulder bodice. Or curtail your curves with a one-piece minimizer worn under a gown that boasts a fitted bodice to emphasize your waist. Balance with a full skirt. Fashion & Flash is chaired by alumna Susan Block (BFA’76) and is designed and coordinated by alumna Kristy Daum (BFA ’01) and Sana Shucart, with assistance from Laura Daum. The models’ makeup will be done by Shiseido Cosmetics, led by Shelia Molina, while shoes are provided by Brown Shoe Company Inc. Lighting, audio and runway tech is by Trent Joyce of Technical Productions. DJ is Doug Curtis of Clockwork Productions. Program design is by alumna Claire Thomas Morgan (BFA ‘08). Outstanding student designers receive a variety of scholarships, cash prizes and awards. The Dominic Michael Silver Scissors Designer of the Year Award is presented to one outstanding senior at the end of the evening.
